Umrah is a pilgrimage to Mecca that can be undertaken at any time of the year, unlike Hajj, which has specific dates. The journey typically involves several key rituals:
1. Intention (Niyyah)
Pilgrims begin with a sincere intention to perform Umrah for the sake of Allah.
2. Ihram
Before entering Mecca, pilgrims enter a state of Ihram, wearing specific garments: men wear two white cloths, while women wear modest attire.
3. Tawaf
Upon arrival in Mecca, pilgrims perform Tawaf, circling the Kaaba seven times in a counter-clockwise direction.
4. Sa’i
After Tawaf, pilgrims perform Sa’i, walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, commemorating Hagar’s search for water for her son, Ishmael.
5. Shaving or Trimming Hair
Men usually shave their heads or trim their hair, while women cut a small portion of their hair, signifying the completion of Umrah.
6. Additional Prayers
Pilgrims often engage in prayers at the Masjid al-Haram, seeking forgiveness and blessings.
Umrah can be a deeply spiritual experience, offering a chance for reflection and connection with faith, and is increasingly popular among Muslims worldwide.
